Oyinkansola a.k.a Ayra Starr, born 14 June 2002, hails from Cotonou, in Bénin Republic but grew up in Lagos State, Nigeria. She was raised by Nigerian parents, Mr & Mrs. Aderibigbe  from Kwara State. She has four siblings: brothers, Ade and Dami and two sisters, Tolulope and Jesutunmise. 

Ayra Starr’s younger brother, who also goes by the nickname Milar, helps co-write most of her music and recently got signed to Mavin Records as a professional songwriter. She was also raised in a music-loving family, and her interest in singing comes mostly from her family.

At the age of 10, Ayra Starr sang in a high school choir and began writing songs with her younger brother. She attended Les Cours Sonou University and received a BA degree in international relations and political science. During her college years, her classmates often bullied her because of her age and appearance. 

In order to counter the feelings she experienced from being taunted, Ayra Starr turned to music by listening to Nicki Minaj’s music on her way to school. Her mother was very supportive of her musical ambitions and always encouraged her to pursue a singing career.


In 2018, Ayra started as a model at 16 with Quove Model Management. She also had the opportunity to work with companies such as Mazelle Studio, Complete Fashion Magazine, and Esperanza Woman before drifting into music.

In 2021, the multi-talented female singer rose to limelight when she released her eponymous EP debut extended play and its hit track “Away”, which ranked number four on Nigeria’s TurnTable for two consecutive weeks and went to number 17 on US Billboard’s Top Triller Global. The music video for her EP’s smash track “Away” was also aired on MTV Base’s Official Naija Top 10 and was included in OkayAfrica’s list of The 9 Best Nigerian Songs of January 2021.

Following the success of ‘Away’ in 2021, Ayra released her debut studio album, 19 & Dangerous. The album, mainly classified as Afro-pop and R&B, which contains 11 tracks including ‘Cast’, ‘Fashion Killer’, ‘Lonely’, ‘Snitch’, ‘Toxic’, ‘In Between’, ‘Beggie Beggie’, ‘Karma’, ‘Bloody Samaritan’, ‘Bridgertn’, ‘Amin’ and has  received positive reviews from critics. In Nigeria, it also gave rise to two top forty songs. 

The EP had five hot tracks, one being ‘Away’, which has been a hit since its release. “Bloody Samaritan,” the lead single from the album, climaxed on the Top 50 chart, becoming the first solo song by a female artist to reach the number-one position. 

In addition, Starr debuted on the Pandora Predictions chart, and on August 28, 2021, she ranked number two on Billboard’s Next Big Sound. Due to her unique voice, she got featured on Johnny Drille’s “in the light” song. In September 2021, she was announced as a brand ambassador for Pepsi Nigeria.

Shortly after the announcement as a brand ambassador, Starr performed during a live eviction episode of Big Brother Naija. She also collaborated with Cheque on “Dangerous”, the second track on his album Bravo. At the 8th African Muzik Magazine Awards, she was nominated for Best Newcomer award. In 2022, the gifted singer released a new single, ‘Rush’, which ranked No.1 on Apples Chart.
